The Single Row Method

The single row method of supporting runner beans is ideal for larger vegetable patches and allotments. The construction is a bit more heavy duty but there are numerous advantages.

  1. You will be easily able to pick from both sides and by picking all the beans you will encourage the plant to produce more and therefore have a longer picking period.
  2. The air is free to move through the foliage and this will reduce any fungus that might be tempted to grow during damp periods
  3. You can protect the vast majority of the plants from the midday sun by planting north to south.

In the diagram above the three central posts can be wooden but I would recommend 50mm angle iron. They need to be 8 foot long with 2 foot in the ground and planted no more than 8 feet apart.

The diagonal posts (straining posts) at each end need to be about 6 foot long and planted at about 45 degrees and down to about half way.

Connect all three central posts with wire and then connect the outside posts to the straining posts with the same wire. Now you can insert a sturdy stick between the wires connected to the staining posts and gently twist. This will pull the posts apart and make sure the wire along the top is taught.

The best thing to use for the runner beans to climb up is bamboo canes but any 8 foot sturdy pole will do. Push them firmly into the ground approximately 18 inches apart and attach at the top with decent string or thin wire.

Your structure is now ready for your seeds or young plants.
